Why Clean Your Roof?
It’s More Than Just Looks
A moss-covered roof isn't only an eyesore — it's a slow problem in the making. Moss, algae and lichen thrive in our damp climate, and once they take hold they hold moisture against the tiles, add weight to the roof and shed debris that clogs your gutters. Left unchecked, that trapped damp can lead to cracked or lifted tiles, leaks and costly repairs down the line.
A professional clean lifts all of that growth away and, just as importantly, treats what's left so it doesn't simply grow straight back. The result is a roof that looks years younger, drains properly, and is protected for the future — a smart bit of maintenance that also does wonders for your home's kerb appeal.
Time For A Clean?
Signs Your Roof Needs Attention
It's not just on the surface — here's why it's worth dealing with.
-

Green or Black Staining
Patches of moss, algae or dark streaking across the tiles.
-

Moss Clumps in the Gutters
Bits of moss shedding off the roof and blocking the guttering.
-

Thick Moss on the Ridges
Spongy growth building up along ridges and in the tile joints.
-

A Tired, Aged Look
The roof making an otherwise well-kept home look neglected.
-

Preparing To Sell
Wanting the whole property to show at its very best for buyers.
-

It's Simply Never Been Done
Years of build-up that a good clean and treatment will transform.
The Hidden Problem
What Moss Really Does To A Roof
It's not just on the surface — here's why it's worth dealing with.
-

Traps Moisture
Moss holds water against the tiles, and in frost that damp can crack and lift them over time.
-

Blocks Gutters
As moss sheds, it washes into gutters and downpipes, causing blockages and overflow.
-

Adds Weight & Spreads
Wet growth adds load to the roof, and the spores left behind spread and regrow if untreated.
The Professional Method
Why We Don’t Jet Wash Roofs
Your roof is expensive to get wrong — so we clean it the safe way.

Pressure Washing A Roof
✘ High pressure can crack and chip tiles
✘ Strips the tile's protective surface
✘ Forces water up under the tiles
✘ Doesn't stop the moss coming back
✘ Leaves debris and water everywhere
-

Kills At The Root — Every roof is biocide-treated so the moss doesn't just grow back
Simply scraping moss off isn't enough — the spores left behind soon return. After we've cleared the moss by hand and soft washed the roof, we treat the whole roof with a specialist biocide that kills moss, algae and lichen at the root and carries on working for months. It slows regrowth dramatically, so your roof stays cleaner for far longer.

Good To Know
Roof Cleaning FAQS
-
Yes. We remove moss carefully by hand and use a gentle, low-pressure soft wash rather than high-pressure jetting, so there's no risk of cracking tiles or forcing water under the laps. Our method is safe on clay, concrete, slate, cement, fragile or damaged tiles and even thatch.
-
Because we finish with a biocide treatment that kills moss and algae at the root and keeps working for months, results last far longer than a clean alone — typically several years, depending on how shaded and damp the roof is.
-
Some areas can be reached with poles, but not everything is done from the ground — where safe roof access is needed we set up our own scaffold towers. Because they're ours, that access is always included in your quote, with no separate scaffold-hire costs.
-
High-pressure washing can crack or chip tiles, strip their protective surface and force water up under them — and it doesn't stop the moss returning. Careful hand removal, a gentle soft wash and a biocide treatment is the safer, longer-lasting professional approach.
-
Most homes are completed in a day, depending on roof size, pitch, access and how much moss there is. We'll give you a good idea of timings when we survey and quote.
